A GFCI, or Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter device protects us from receiving electric shocks. They do this by detecting a fault in any electrical devices that we have plugged into the wall sockets and then shutting off power to those circuits as quickly as possible. These should be installed anywhere there are receptacles where you might stand in water; for example, near your sink so if you accidentally get wet while washing dishes it will immediately shut down all of the power coming through other outlets on that circuit (as long as they’re not within six feet). A ground-fault circuit interrupter is an important safety feature found at most homes today.
One sign is if you have flickering lights, circuits are tripped often or circuit breakers with outdated amperage. If any of these sound familiar then this might not just be a convenient time to update your panel but instead an urgent one! As technology changes, our homes do too. A home electric panel typically lasts 25-40 years but today’s increased power use means they can start working beyond their intended capacity which can lead to unsafe conditions. Also, If your home has a Federal Pacific Electric Company (FPE) panel it needs to be replaced. The panels are considered unsafe and pose hazards such as fires and shock. These panels were installed during the 1950’s up until sometime in the 1980’s. It was eventually discovered by electricians and home inspectors that Federal Pacific Electric panels failed to provide proper protection to homeowners. The panels no longer have their UL listing and are required to be replaced by homeowner insurance companies.
We often hear from customers who want to do their own electrical work because they feel it will be cheaper or more convenient. Might we suggest this: Under no circumstances should you ever attempt doing any type of home improvement on your own without first consulting a professional. The last thing you want is to find out your home has been damaged by faulty wiring, or worse – that it’s going up in flames. That’s why we have professional electricians on hand with the expertise and equipment needed for any type of repair or installation work necessary.
You’ve probably heard of knob and tube wiring in old houses, but you might not have known what it was. Knob and tube wire is a type of electrical system that wasn’t installed until the early 1900’s to 1940’s. It’s more dangerous than newer types because this type of insulation has a tendency to dry out, become brittle, and crack; leaving exposed wires that are both dangerous for shock or fire risks.
